Shift Note: Bulk Queue First, Hard Cases Escalated

The overnight queue contains thousands of product descriptions to label and a handful of customer complaints that need careful interpretation. Sending everything to the strongest available AI model is simple, but it can spend money where extra capability adds little value. Sending everything to the cheapest model creates a different problem: difficult cases may receive answers that look confident but miss the point.

A better operating rule is straightforward: use a lower-cost model for repeatable work, check its output, and escalate the cases that need more capability or human judgment.

Put repetitive, checkable tasks in the bulk queue

An AI model takes instructions and input, then generates an answer. Different models have different prices, capabilities, and response times. A more expensive model is not automatically better for every task, and a cheaper model is not automatically unsuitable for production.

Good bulk tasks have narrow instructions and answers you can inspect. Examples include sorting support tickets into fixed categories, extracting invoice dates, or rewriting product descriptions to follow a template. These jobs often reward consistency more than deep reasoning.

Start with one lower-cost candidate. For example, you could test DeepSeek V4 Flash for a labeling queue, provided its current pricing and your own results make it a sensible choice. Treat the model name as a candidate to evaluate, not proof that it fits.

Reserve the escalation lane for ambiguity and consequences

Hard work is not always long work. A two-sentence complaint can require more judgment than a hundred straightforward records. Conflicting instructions, missing context, unfamiliar terminology, and several dependent reasoning steps are all reasons to consider escalation.

You might evaluate Claude Opus 5.5 as a stronger-model candidate for these cases. The important comparison is whether it improves results on your actual examples enough to justify its current cost.

Higher stakes also change the workflow. Legal, financial, medical, or security-sensitive decisions may need a qualified human reviewer regardless of which model produces the draft. Escalating to another model is not a substitute for accountability.

Make routing rules visible before the batch starts

Routing means deciding which model receives a task. Beginners do not need an elaborate system. A few explicit rules are easier to debug than an opaque chain of model calls.

  • Send routine records with all required fields to the lower-cost model.
  • Check that each response follows the required format and uses only allowed categories.
  • Escalate records with missing information, conflicting evidence, or failed checks.
  • Send high-impact decisions and unresolved cases to a human review queue.

Do not rely only on a model saying it is confident. A confident answer can still be wrong. Use checks tied to the task, such as whether an extracted invoice total matches the source or whether a chosen category belongs to your approved list. Sample apparently successful outputs too, because format checks cannot detect every meaning error.

Measure the cost of accepted work, not just requests

A low request price can be misleading if outputs require repeated retries or extensive editing. Track model charges alongside rejection rates, escalation frequency, and reviewer effort. The useful question is what it costs to produce an accepted result.

Before processing the full queue, run a small, representative test containing both ordinary and difficult examples. Compare outputs against answers reviewed by a person. Keep those examples as a regression set so that changes to models, prompts, or routing rules do not quietly reduce quality.

Keep access simple while the routing policy matures

Relay365 is a practical option when you want to test and route work across model families through a pay-as-you-go relay desk. It works with Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and OpenAI SDK clients. Shared access can simplify integration, though you should still check each model's pricing, supported features, and suitability for your data.

Create a Relay365 account when you are ready to run a small comparison with representative tasks. Start with one bulk lane, one escalation lane, and clear acceptance checks. Expand only when the results show that the extra complexity earns its place.
