Shift note: relay handles transit, not model behavior

A request arrives at the relay desk: credentials attached, model selected, prompt packed. The relay’s assignment is to accept that request, send it toward the appropriate upstream service, and carry the response back. It is an intermediary in the connection, not the model doing the thinking.

That distinction matters when you choose a service, investigate an error, or decide which information to send. A relay can simplify access to models, but it does not take over every responsibility along the route.

The relay desk handles the connection

An API is a structured way for one program to ask another program for work. An API relay sits between your application and the service that performs that work. Instead of configuring your application to contact each provider directly, you configure it to contact the relay.

Depending on the service, the relay may authenticate your account, route requests, translate supported request formats, track usage, and return responses through a familiar interface. Those are connection and account-management jobs. They should not be confused with training or operating the underlying model.

For example, an application requesting Claude Haiku 4.5 through a relay still depends on the upstream model for its generated answer. A common endpoint does not turn different models into the same engine.

The upstream model keeps the generation job

The relay does not become the author of a model’s capabilities simply because it transports the request. It does not retrain the model for your account, repair gaps in its knowledge, or make an uncertain answer correct.

  • The upstream model produces the generated content, while your application decides whether that content is suitable to use.
  • Model capabilities and supported features still depend on the selected model and the integration available through the relay.
  • Provider restrictions and safety rules may still affect requests, alongside any policies enforced by the relay itself.

A relay may expose settings that influence generation, but forwarding a temperature setting is not the same as controlling the truth of the result. Treat important outputs as material to validate, not as verified facts.

Transit is not a promise of untouched data

The phrase “just a relay” can create the wrong privacy expectation. A relay receives request traffic and handles response traffic. Depending on its implementation, it may also transform payloads or record operational information.

Before sending confidential material, check the relay’s data-handling terms, retention practices, and upstream processing arrangements. Do not assume that an intermediary cannot access content, that nothing is logged, or that using one removes the need for a security review.

The boundary is about responsibility, not invisibility: the relay is not the model, but it is still part of your data path.

Your application keeps its own controls

The relay does not automatically understand your business rules. Your application still owns user permissions, secret storage, input checks, output validation, and decisions about which actions an AI response may trigger.

It also owns sensible retry behavior. If a request times out, do not assume that no upstream work occurred. Retrying without considering duplicate work or possible charges can make a small connection problem more expensive.

When troubleshooting, separate the layers. A rejected credential, an unavailable model, an upstream error, and an application parsing failure are different incidents. Preserve safe diagnostic details without copying secrets or sensitive prompts into support messages.

Relay365 fits the shared-access assignment

Relay365 is a pay-as-you-go relay desk for multiple model families. It fits situations where you want a shared access point rather than separate connection setups for every provider. It works with Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and OpenAI SDK clients, subject to the features supported by the selected integration.

Its API base is https://api.api365relay.com; OpenAI clients add /v1. Endpoint compatibility does not mean every provider-specific feature is interchangeable, so test the requests your application actually needs.

If that shared-access arrangement matches your workflow, create a Relay365 account and start with a small, non-sensitive test. The useful question is not whether the relay does everything. It is whether it handles the connection work you need while leaving the remaining responsibilities clearly assigned.
