Embeddings Endpoints: A Practical Walkthrough

Understand what an embeddings endpoint returns

1. Start with the distinction between generating text and representing text. An embeddings endpoint converts input into a vector: a list of numbers that represents features useful for comparing meaning. You receive data to search or compare, not a conversational answer. Typical applications include semantic search, recommendations, clustering, and similarity-based classification. ([developers.openai.com](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/embeddings?utm_source=openai))

For your first project, choose one narrow task: finding the support article that best matches a customer’s question. Keep answer generation outside the initial experiment so you can inspect whether retrieval itself works.

Decide whether semantic matching solves your problem

2. Use embeddings when related ideas may use different wording. A search for “change my payment card” should ideally find an article about updating billing details. Semantic retrieval can surface relevant passages even when the query and document share few keywords. ([developers.openai.com](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/retrieval?utm_source=openai))

  • Try embeddings when users describe the same subject in varied language. ([developers.openai.com](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/embeddings?utm_source=openai))
  • Keep keyword matching in your evaluation when exact product names, identifiers, or error codes matter.
  • Test hybrid retrieval, which combines semantic and keyword signals, rather than assuming one approach fits every query. ([developers.openai.com](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/retrieval?utm_source=openai))

Verify endpoint support before choosing a model

3. Check the provider’s documentation for an embeddings-capable model, its input limits, and its request format. In the OpenAI API, embeddings use POST /v1/embeddings with model and input fields. Input can contain one text string or a batch of strings, subject to documented limits. Do not substitute a chat model identifier simply because it works with a different endpoint. ([developers.openai.com](https://developers.openai.com/api/reference/resources/embeddings/methods/create?utm_source=openai))

Relay365 is a pay-as-you-go relay desk for multiple model families and works with OpenAI SDK clients. It is worth considering if you want that integration pattern, but verify the specific embeddings route and model availability before committing. SDK compatibility alone should not be treated as confirmation that every endpoint is supported.

Prepare a small collection of searchable passages

4. Select a modest set of real support articles and split longer documents into coherent passages. Keep each passage’s text, document identifier, title, and source location together. Chunking and indexing are core parts of preparing documents for retrieval; the returned passage needs enough context to be useful. ([developers.openai.com](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/retrieval?utm_source=openai))

Start with headings and paragraph boundaries rather than an elaborate splitting strategy. Include a few difficult examples, such as articles with similar titles but different instructions. These give you something concrete to evaluate.

Send a request and inspect the vectors

5. Submit your passages through the embeddings endpoint. Inspect the response before building storage around it: check that each submitted input has a corresponding result, use response indexes to preserve alignment, and record the vector length. The OpenAI response contains embedding objects with indexes and numerical vectors. Supported options, including configurable dimensions, depend on the selected model. ([developers.openai.com](https://developers.openai.com/api/reference/resources/embeddings/methods/create?utm_source=openai))

Keep the embedding configuration alongside your index. For providers offering task-specific settings, follow their query-versus-document guidance; Google’s embeddings documentation, for example, distinguishes retrieval queries from retrieval documents. ([ai.google.dev](https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/embeddings?utm_source=openai))

Retrieve passages before adding generated answers

6. Embed a test question, compare it with the stored passage vectors, and inspect the highest-ranked results. Cosine similarity is a common comparison method. For larger collections, a vector database can make nearest-neighbor retrieval practical. ([developers.openai.com](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/embeddings?utm_source=openai))

Only add answer generation after the retrieved passages look useful. Pass those passages to your chosen generation endpoint as context. This separates two debugging questions: whether the system found the right evidence, and whether it used that evidence appropriately. Retrieval can supply relevant material to a generation workflow, but it does not itself write the final answer. ([developers.openai.com](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/retrieval?utm_source=openai))

Evaluate retrieval before expanding your integration

7. Build a repeatable test set containing paraphrases, exact identifiers, ambiguous questions, and questions your documents cannot answer. Review the retrieved passages manually, record request costs and timings, and compare changes against the same examples. Avoid choosing a universal similarity cutoff without testing it on your content.

If a pay-as-you-go relay fits your workflow, create a Relay365 account and confirm embeddings support with a small request before scaling. A successful first milestone is simple: your application reliably retrieves useful passages you can inspect and trace back to their source.
